The Day I Realized My Website Didn't Reflect Who I Am Anymore

Don't you hate people who can never admit when they're wrong? That's me. I'm a justifier. Because I'm a thinker, a careful thinker. So, if I'm wrong then that means my thought process was off, and that, I just can't have.

When I developed the idea to start writing biographies for those in need (which is everyone..so get you one. TODAY!), it helped me expand my idea of the importance of branding. The idea blossomed from my girl Jenn who asked me to write one for her for an upcoming major gig, so obviously it had to be super professional, but I realized I had written at least 3, not including my own, prior to hers. Not only did they have to cater to the use, but to the person and to that persons brand. As much as I love branding and marketing for businesses, I've never focused as much on others' personal branding.

So, I went to add a "Biographer" page to my website. Opened up my boo Squarespace. Logged in. Said to myself, "You're a fraud."

My website was the worst reflection of myself that I've ever seen. It was dark and dreary and unwelcoming and boring - as if it was for a funeral home or something. I stayed up until 5 AM with the relentless goal to completely revamp this bad boy. There was no way I could preach to y'all about personal branding and it's importance and present something that didn't reflect how I'm feeling about myself and my life right now.

Now, a week ago, if someone had asked me for my website I would have given it to them without a second thought. Not that dark, dreary, unwelcoming and boring was who I was a week ago, but for whatever reason, the site resonated with me. But not 3 days ago, not at all.

And that's okay.

It is okay to dramatically change. It is okay to not like something today that you liked yesterday. It is okay to change your mind. It is okay to be a different person and make a different choice.

Thankfully, we are human beings. We have the capacity for thought. We have free will. We have the ability to grow and develop. And thank God!

Don't fear change. It's good and it's healthy. I like to practice reflectiveness as often as I can. One of my favorite things to say is, "Self-awareness is so important," not because I'm a jerk and I usually say it when I know someone isn't self aware, but because it really is. If you're not self-aware, it's more than likely that you're drifting. Without self-awareness, it's impossible to know where you're going with your life because you don't know who you are and what you like. Not to confuse self-awareness with purpose because even if you aren't self-aware, you definitely have purpose, we all do. But self-awareness leads to the discovery of purpose. Change happens in an instant, don't run from it, follow it. It's showing you and telling you things you're supposed to know. Change writes your story if you let it.

Let it.

Recognize change today and everyday. If we never changed, even in the slightest, we'd never be who we are today. Your brand is built on you, your life and your decisions. Make it good.
