Use Punctuation to Shape the Feeling, Not Just Follow the Rules
We learned punctuation in school like it was math: rules to follow.
But in real life, punctuation is about pace. Tone. Breath.
Here's what I mean:
Periods stop the thought. They give weight. Finality.
Ellipses trail off when you're not done but don't want to say more.
Semicolons connect two full ideas that feel like they belong together.
Commas are soft pauses — like catching your breath in a thought.
Exclamations land emotion — used sparingly, they hit harder.
Em dashes? They interrupt — with intention. Use them carefully.
Most AI can't feel that rhythm. You can. So when you write — read it out loud. Let the sentence match the emotion.
If your thoughts are running fast, let them. If they're grounded, write like it.
Use punctuation to pace your reader, not just to please your grammar teacher (but I am still your grammar teacher!).
If you’re looking for help writing something quick and don’t know where to place the punctuation, I can help with that!
