Don’t Fall into Perfection’s Trap

Once a week, someone tells me that they're ready to write a book. Books about lessons from their careers, books about drama from their lives, books sharing prayers, books telling children's stories.

I'm inspired by all of the ideas. I'm challenged by the amount of people who feel ill-equipped to do it. Of course, I'm glad it's a situation I have an answer for. But, I pray for our collective courage, our wisdom, and our strength to ask for help.

I'm praying for myself, too. It takes a lot, but your voice needs to be heard in the world. Your ideas aren't yours to hoard — they're yours to share. There's still room for more books on the shelves, and yours is one of them.

When people ask how I mom, run my businesses, and work, my typical answer is, "I don't." And it's the truth.

Even with systems in place, I still can't sit back and relax. There's still toddlers to feed, proposals to send, uniforms to buy, content to create, client work to complete, Instacart to order, and this email to write. It feels like it never ends.

But, I'm doing it. While you might still be thinking about starting, I'm in the thick of figuring it out.

The trap of perfectionism is to wait until you get it great to get it started. The trap of perfectionism doesn't end once you start — it changes. It becomes thinking 3 steps ahead, creating 5 campaigns, having 17 ideas. But then, you own something to make those things happen.

The goal isn't to have it all figured out before you start. The goal is to start and figure it out as you go.

What systems can you put in place now that will save you time when things get overwhelming? What services do you actually love doing that people will pay for? How can you build your business around your real life, not some fantasy version of it?

I might be overwhelmed, but I'm overwhelmed with actual businesses. You're overwhelmed with the idea of maybe starting one someday.

Ready to join me in the chaos of actually doing it? Let's talk.

Dominique Wilder

I'm enthusiastic about thoughtful creativity. I'm best at taking big-picture ideas and breaking them into puzzle pieces worth constructing, and I enjoy the pursuit. I love strategizing, writing and laughing. I live to inspire people to be their best.

I'm a boy mom x2. A 4x published author, and I help others self-publish. A poet. A designer. A licensed hairdresser. A content and brand strategist for Google at work. I do strategic and design thinking for founders and organizations building something worth building well.

I shape chaos into clarity. I can turn anything into a story worth sharing.
