Formerly Unwell: A Poem About the Woman at the Well and Every Woman Who's Been Her

She was silenced,
isolated,
vulnerable,
scrutinized,
and hiding.

She met Jesus
Who went out of His way
To break the rules
Just for her

He took a detour
Made other arrangements
Spoke when he shouldn’t have
Met her where she was

In shame
Torn from guilt and lies
Seeking to find peace
A mess she was

A well full of water
To cleanse the past
And give life to the future
Just like Him Isn’t it like Him? To show up on off hours
End up on off roads
Reveal all to a person the world deems as “off”

Putting
All convention aside
He decides
She’s the one

When she met Him

When He told her

When she knew it was all true,

He is all true

She was exuberant, connected,
secure, embraced,
and seen.

She believed.
She changed.
She spoke.

A testimony.

Jesus says,
“Your worth is more than a human vow,
I see you, love you — here and now.”

I believe.
I am changed.
I can speak.
